Baby Rhino Gertjie’s Mud Bath
Here we see Gertjie’s first mud bath. It’s a very cute video and something I enjoyed watching. Some of you may be asking though – why are they slathering the baby rhino in a mud bath? Mud baths help keep rhinos cool. The mud also helps repels bugs and parasites from latching onto their skin as well as keep the animals protected from the sun. So mud baths are definitely something these animals need and I love how the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre is proactive in trying to teach and mimic normal rhino behavior for little Gertjie. I find myself torn between wanting the baby rhino rehabilitated enough to eventually enter the wild and the hope that he would stay at the sanctuary if only to be protected from poachers.
